DAYTON, Ohio - A policeman who said he was shot by an unknown assailant actually shot himself with a gun he stole from the police department’s property room, Dayton police Chief Julian Davis said Wednesday.
Davis said he does not know why Donald Fink, 31, a five-year veteran of the force, stole the handgun and shot himself in the stomach Tuesday while patrolling. Fink had been wearing a bulletproof vest and was not seriously injured.
Davis said Fink is currently on sick leave and is convalescing at a medical facility.
The chief said the police department has counselors to help officers with any stress-related issues.
“He didn’t reach out to anybody to tell us what was going on,” Davis said.
