BESSEMER, Ala. — Cell phone video captured the Friday shooting of a knife-wielding suspect by an officer.

According to Al.com, police responded to reports of a man threatening someone with a knife when the shooting occurred.

46-year-old suspect Donald Ray “Hambone” Wilson opened the door of his residence armed with a knife when police arrived on the scene.

After Wilson refused multiple orders to put down the weapon, police used pepper spray on the suspect to no effect.

When continued orders to drop the knife were ignored, one officer fired a single shot, hitting Wilson in the chest.

Bessemer police officers do not carry TASERs, according to the report.

Wilson then laid down on the ground and was arrested and transported to a local hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Neighbors told Al.com that Wilson has mental health issues, and has had problems prior to the incident.

Dessire Thomas, Wilson’s ex-girlfriend, questioned the use of force.

“Everybody was hollering ‘Hambone, Hambone. They didn’t have to shoot him,” Thomas told Al.com.

Officials are currently investigating the shooting. There were no other injuries.
