RICHMOND, Calif. — A desperate man with a lengthy criminal record intent on committing more crimes stopped himself and instead went to police for help, NBC Bay Area reported.
Trumaine Daniels, 35, was planning to steal food for his hungry family, but instead turned to the police in his community for support.
“All my life, I always said, ‘f*ck the police,’ but here I am today and look who’s helping me,” he told the news site.
The father of four has been in and out of jail since he was 12 and started selling drugs with his father at age nine. Daniels has been trying to turn his life around and the first step was to go to police for help.
Daniels went to the Richmond Police Department and spoke with Officer Brian Lande.
“Mr. Daniels explained to me he needed help,” Lande told the news site. “He became tearful and told me he was hungry, he was living in his car and didn’t know what to do.”
Officers used their personal money to help Daniels find food, rent a hotel room and get back on his feet.
“He came here for help,” Officer Terry Thomas said. “That’s what we’re doing is helping him out.”
Daniels has a new outlook on life and hoped with officers’ help he may find a job.
“They’re my angels in disguise,” he said. “They’re like the blessing I’ve been waiting for that I didn’t know [was] there.”
