CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A Chattanooga police officer is being credited for stopping a woman’s attempted leap from the Market Street Bridge.

The police news release said Officer Steven Meador was sent to the bridge about 11:30 p.m. on a report of a woman standing on the edge.

He saw someone sitting on the southbound side of the handrail and got out of his car to talk to her, but she only grew more agitated.

Then the woman stood up and faced the river. Meador told another officer on the scene to keep trying to talk to her.

The woman aid, “I’m done!” and started crying while looking down at the river.

Fearing for her life, Meador ran up, grabbed the back of her shirt and pants and pulled her from the railing.

The woman sustained minor injuries, police said.
