MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Two Florida officers are being recognized after video captured them saving the life of an elderly woman who was reportedly stuck under her mattress for six days.
WSVN reports that Miami Beach Officers Whismick Charles and Pablo Gonzalez came to 89-year-old Violeta Pilgrim’s aid after a concerned family member contacted police. After officers didn’t receive an answer at Pilgrim’s home, they went to the rear of the building and started knocking on windows, police said.
That’s when they saw Pilgrim on the floor. Pilgrim reportedly fell and became trapped under the mattress.
Charles and Gonzalez dragged a piece of white concrete to prop themselves into the unit before lifting the mattress and saving Pilgrim, Officer Ernesto Rodriguez said. Gonzalez said it’s “a miracle” that she was alive after going six days without food or water.
Pilgrim was taken to a hospital where she was recovering. The two officers were recognized for their life-saving efforts.
“There are many reasons why officers in Miami Beach sign up for this position,” said Charles. “We don’t sign up for the glory. We’re just out here doing our jobs.”
