NEWARK, N.J. — As marijuana sales become legal in New Jersey and the state debates if police officers can use it while off duty, one supposed Newark cop smoked on the job. Well, as part of a comedy bit, anyway.

Darius DK, a comedian, actor and musician, posted a video on Instagram Wednesday (yes, 4/20) featuring him wearing a police officer’s uniform, appearing to smoke weed and sharing it with a citizen while directing traffic. The video was so popular that even legendary rapper and stoner Snoop Dogg shared it on his Instagram page Wednesday.

It’s unclear if the video was actually shot Wednesday or at another time.

The video was shot on the corner of Bergen Street and Clinton Avenue in Newark, very close to the Newark Police Department 5th Precinct — which would suggest DK is either very daring, or the police approved of the bit. A Newark Police Department vehicle is seen in the video.

When reached Thursday, Newark Police said they were aware of the prank and surmised DK had taken advantage of a police barricade that had already been set.

Skits featuring DK smoking weed in a police officer uniform have become something of a running bit for the comedian. He was previously featured in a video doing so alongside, you guessed it, Snoop Dogg.

When asked why Darius DK chose Newark for this video, his management at Knight Team Management did not provide details at time of publication.

Marijuana sales officially became legal in New Jersey Thursday, with several dispensaries opening around the state after a long legal process.
