SAN BERNARDINO — A Rancho Cucamonga man gave up his job as a schoolteacher to become a California Highway patrolman.

Jonathan Boyd, 33, graduated from Etiwanda High School in 2001 and went on to earn a bachelor of science degree from Cal Poly Pomona, according to a CHP news release. He began working as a teacher at John L. Golden Elementary School in the Etiwanda School District.

But switching career directions, Boyd recently graduated from the 27-week training course at the CHP academy in Sacramento.

Boyd was the cadet company commander of his class. His training included vehicle patrol, accident investigation, first aid, and capture-and-arrest of suspected violators, including those who drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the release states.

His training also covered traffic control, report writing, recovery of stolen vehicles, assisting the motoring public, issuing citations, emergency scene management, and knowledge of various codes including the vehicle, penal and health and safety codes.

While at Cal Poly, he played guard for the school’s basketball team. He was featured in a university publication along with other teammates who visited a Rancho Cucamonga classroom to encourage second-graders to read.

“Since I’m from the Inland Empire, it’s great for me to be able to give back to the communities I grew up in,” he was quoted as saying.

His first assigned duty station is the CHP’s Westminster office.
