ATLANTA — Atlanta police officers shot and killed a gun-wielding man in Buckhead early Sunday after he refused orders to drop the weapon, police said.
Police were called to the 4700 block of Peachtree Road just before 1 a.m., where officers confirmed reports of a man walking down the street waving a gun, according to Atlanta police spokesman James Polite.
When officers ordered the man to drop the weapon, he instead turned and pointed the handgun at them, prompting the officers to shoot him, Polite said.
The man, whom police described as in his early 30s, died at the scene.
Authorities found an additional handgun on his body during a search, Polite said.
The officers, whose names and experience levels were not released, are on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the department’s Office of Professional Standards and its Homicide Division.
Separately, a security guard was shot just after 2 a.m. Sunday after arguing with two people in a parking lot in the 500 block of Courtland Street downtown, Polite said.
The guard, whose identity was unavailable later Sunday, was shot in the leg and abdomen, Polite said.
He was taken to a local hospital, where Polite said he was last reported in stable condition.
A suspect is in custody and another at large.
Their identities were not immediately available.
