Military vet hit by stray bullet from Okla. police range

The Associated Press

ELK CITY, Okla. He served 24 years in the military without getting hurt, but a stray bullet fired from about a mile away found a Vietnam veteran in Oklahoma. The shot came from a police firing range in Elk City.

The man was standing outside a car dealership and says it felt like someone struck him with a bat. He touched his left side because it hurt and then saw blood.

Bill Bolechala a councilman in a nearby city, says doctors left the bullet in his side but will remove if it causes an infection.

The Elk City police chief says the bullet must have ricocheted off a metal frame that holds the targets, and he’s planning to replace the frames with wood.

Police told Bolechala they’ll handle his medical bills. He says he has no ill will.
