The History of the Police Motorcycle by Harley Davidson

To trace the history of the police motorcycle is to trace the history of Harley-Davidson. The story begins in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where William Harley and Arthur, Walter and William Davidson built their first production motorcycle in 1903. It went 100,000 miles under five owners, and over the next few years Harley-Davidson motorcycles became known for their dependability and performance. It wasn’t long before police departments began to recognize the advantages that motorcycles have for police use.

A lot has changed since then. Our police motorcycles have been continually refined to meet the changing needs of law enforcement agencies in America and around the world. Today, features like our low-maintenance final belt drive and reliable Twin Cam 88 Police engine make them among the most inexpensive to operate in the industry. Harley-Davidson serves over 2000 departments in North America and law enforcement agencies in more than 40 countries worldwide. But through it all, some things haven’t changed: The gleaming chrome. The pure Harley? design. The rumble of the engine. It’s a combination that, for 94 years, has been commanding a level of respect unequaled by anything else on the road. A motor officer shouldn’t have to settle for anything less.

Since 1908, Harley-Davidson police motorcycles have seen 94 years of duty and millions of miles in service to law enforcement agencies around the world. From Toronto to Sao Paulo, from Seoul to New York City, our police motorcycles continue to build on their legendary reputation by providing superior performance and the reliability needed to withstand the rigors of everyday life.
