ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — When a New Mexico police officer responded to a report of a theft at a convenience store, he had no idea the call would change his life forever.
CNN reports that after Officer Ryan Holets finished the call, he noticed a couple shooting up heroin in broad daylight behind the store. Crystal Champ, who was injecting the drug into her companion’s arm, was pregnant.
When Holets spoke with Champ, 35, she admitted she was eight months pregnant and addicted. After Holets warned Champ of the dangers of doing heroin while pregnant, she told the LEO that she desperately wanted someone to adopt her baby.
In that moment, Holets offered to adopt the child.
Holets said the baby, born on Oct. 12 and named Hope, suffered through the painful process of detoxing and withdrawals.Hope is no longer at the hospital, but her family takes her for weekly medical checkups.
Officer Holets’ family knows there are likely more struggles Hope will face in the future, but they’re banking on love to get them through the challenges ahead.
