CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A 15-minute police pursuit late Sunday ended with a car going into water and a Virginia State Police trooper rescuing the driver.

About 11:45 p.m. Sunday, Chesapeake police tried to make a traffic stop near Chesapeake Square Mall, but the 2010 Chevrolet Impala led police on a chase into Portsmouth and then back into Chesapeake.

State Trooper J.K. Zyra followed the pursuit after the driver exited Interstate 64 at Great Bridge Boulevard and continued to Robert Welch Lane and Finck Lane, where the Impala ran into a retention pond that was about 12 feet deep, a State Police news release said.

Zyra jumped into the pond to help . The passenger was already swimming from the vehicle but the driver was still inside. Zyra broke the glass and pulled him out before the car sank.

Zyra had cuts to the top of his hand and arm. The two men were treated for minor injuries.

Frederick Forson-Peebles was charged with eluding and driving with a suspended operator’s license, said Dorienne Boykin, Chesapeake police spokeswoman. The passenger, Richard Henry Taylor, was charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

The two Hampton men could face additional charges.
