The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is about to send its largest team of agents ever to a single event - the Republican National Convention in the city next month.
Although the agency refused to say exactly how many ATFE agents will be here during the four-day soiree, it could be as many as 230, sources said. The New York office has about 160 agents, which would be supplemented by another 70 agents from outside offices, the sources said.
> William McMahon, the special ATFE agent in charge of the New York office, said the group will be “bigger than the contingent used at the World Series, the Salt lake City Olympics or the Super Bowl.”
The ATFE squads will have two of their 30 bomb trucks in the Big Apple. Detecting explosives will be the top priority. The Republican convention will be Aug. 30 to Sept. 2.
