Indonesia Bombing:

A bomb explosion has killed at least 15 people and injured many others at the luxury Marriott Hotel in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. The blast damaged five floors of the American-run hotel, shattering glass and damaging cars parked outside. Indonesian Defense Minister Matori Abdul Jalil said it was caused by a bomb and was “clearly an act of terrorism”. About 150 people are reported to have been injured, including Americans. The governor of Jakarta, Sutiyoso, said the explosion was “very likely” to have been carried out by a suicide bomber and the work of a terrorist group aligned with al Qaeda. Police say the bomb is thought to have been inside a Toyota car parked outside the lobby of the hotel, which is located near foreign embassies and office blocks. The explosion hit during a busy lunchtime in the commercial part of city.

Follow Up - Aviation Advisory Relating to al Qaeda Hijack Plots:

Homeland Security officials are issuing an advisory directing the aviation industry and all federal screeners and local authorities to pay particular attention to electronic items like remote key locks, and specific brands and models of cell phones, boom boxes and cameras. It read, “The hijackers may attempt to use common items carried by travelers, such as cameras, modified as weapons.” Recent raids of al Qaeda safe houses overseas turned up evidence that the group was trying to modify electronic devices to carry small weapons or explosives, according to administration officials. For instance, a camera flash was being modified to convert to, or carry, a stun gun, the officials said. Terrorists could retrieve the items after going through security and use them to commandeer planes. The discoveries in the safe houses led to the decision last week to warn the aviation sector of possible hijackings.

Warning from al Qaeda Leader:

Over the weekend, an audiotape purported to be from a top deputy to Osama bin Laden was broadcast by the Dubai-based Arabic-language network Al Arabiya, threatening that the United States and its allies will pay a “very high price” if any of the men held at Guantanamo Bay are harmed. A CIA technical analysis found the voice on the tape is “most likely” that of al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, a CIA official said Monday. The tape said “We are saying to America one thing: What you saw with your eyes so far are only the first tactics we are using. The real battle didn’t start yet.”
