BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Dashcam video captured what could have been a deadly traffic stop for a Battle Creek officer, WOODTV reported.
Officer Brad Gentry pulled over 21-year-old Darriyone Zamone Clark-Brown on March 5. As Gentry approached the car and said, “What’s up man?” Clark-Brown fired a single shot at Gentry’s head.
Gentry stumbled backwards as Clark-Brown sped away. Gentry returned fire and reported “shots fired, shots fired” into his radio.
“He shot me. I’m not hit,” Gentry told dispatchers.
Gentry then pursued the suspect for four minutes through residential neighborhoods reaching speeds of 70 miles per hour. Other officers joined in and Clark-Brown was apprehended after a foot pursuit by a K-9 officer.
The shot caused temporary hearing loss for the two-year veteran officer.
“He’s not back on the job. He will be soon,” Maj. Jim Grafton said to the news site. “We’re just thankful that he’s able to return back to the job. After that incident, he returned home safely to his friends and family.”
Police are investigating why the suspect would fire at an officer.
“We don’t know what was going through the suspect’s mind at the time,” Grafton said. “Why did he decide to do this? I don’t know.”
Police said the video serves as a reminder of the dangers in everyday situations.
Clark-Brown was arraigned Monday and charged with intent to murder, carrying a concealed weapon, felony firearm, fleeing and eluding, resisting, obstructing or assaulting an officer and driving without a license. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
