3 Sought in Shooting of Calif. Officer

Police are looking for three men they believe were involved in the shooting of a Fontana, CA officer Saturday night, according to officials. Jesse Lomeli, 25; Vincent Rene Rodriguez, 18; and Raymundo Lopez, 34, are suspected of carjacking a vehicle in Rancho Cucamonga on Friday night, then shooting an officer Saturday night in Fontana during a traffic stop, said Fontana Police Captain Larry Clark.

The three men are members of a local gang, Clark said, and are considered armed and dangerous. They may be traveling together in Lomeli’s 1993 silver, four-door Pontiac Sunbird with the California license plate 3EDB673.

About 6 p.m. Saturday, the officer, whose name has been withheld for safety reasons, stopped a 1995 red Pontiac Firebird near Elwood Court and Barbee Street for speeding and having no plates, Clark said. He added that the officer did not know the car had been reported stolen. As the officer approached the car, the occupants fired a medium-caliber weapon at him and ran off, Clark said. The officer returned fire but Clark said it did not appear the suspects were hit.

The officer was shot three times and was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton where he is in serious condition after a five-hour operation Saturday night, police said. The officer is expected to survive and could be released as early as today. A complete recovery is possible, the doctor added.

Departments with any information on the Saturday night shooting or 3 men are asked to call the Fontana PD at (909) 350-7720.
