Ariz. Police Cars to Return to Black-And-White Look

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - By the end of 2005, the city’s police cars will look a lot like they did some 60 years ago.

The Police Department is returning to its roots when it starts taking delivery of 50 patrol cars with a black front, a black back and a white mid-section.

“It’s a more traditional color configuration,” said Assistant Police Chief Roberto Villaseor. “We think the appearance enhances our professional image.”

Villaseor said visibility is a main reason the department is returning to the color scheme it had from the 1930s to late 1940s.

Tucson is the latest in a long line of cities to return to black-and-white patrol cars. Among the others are Montclair, N.J.; Menlo Park, Calif.; Eagan, Minn.; and Fond du Lac, Wis.
