It started as an attempted robbery in northwest Atlanta Wednesday afternoon and ended in a shootout that left a man dead and his mother and an Atlanta police officer wounded.
Police identified the deceased man as Chablis A. Owens, 26, of Atlanta. His mother, Elizabeth Owens, 57, received a non-life-threatening head wound, police said.
Officer Laila Sabree, 23, was shot in both hands and was recovering Wednesday night at Piedmont Hospital.
Police said that shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday, the Owenses drove up to a woman using an ATM on Northside Parkway and demanded money.
The woman drove off and called police to report that two people in a cream-colored sport utility vehicle had tried to rob her, police said.
Sabree, who has been with the Police Department three years, pursued the SUV until it ran off the road in the 3100 block of Northside Drive.
Police said that when Sabree pulled alongside, Chablis Owens fired several times with a handgun. Sabree fired back, police said.
Chablis Owens was sentenced to a year in prison in 2002 for possession of cocaine, state Department of Corrections records show.
His mother, Elizabeth Owens, is a licensed practical nurse whose license to practice in the state is active. She is charged with battery and aggravated assault.
