CLINTON, Iowa (AP) - Clinton’s popular Citizen’s Police Academy, a class to teach community members about law enforcement, won’t be held for at least two years because of budget cuts.
“It was an excellent program,” Police Chief Brian Guy said. “It was probably one of the best community relations vehicles the department has had since its inception.”
The academy was started in 1995 and averages 20 students a year, Guy said.
“I know we want to continue the Citizen Police Academy, but we also realize there are problems with the budget,” said City Council member Bev Hermann. “So, we have to tighten our belts along with everybody else.”
Most of the costs of the program come from paying police officers overtime to teach the class.
