Chicago Police Involved in Shootout with Ex Chicago Cop after Traffic Stop

Retired Chicago police officer Howard Morgan, 52, who still works in law enforcement as a senior patrolman for the Burlington Northern Railroad, was stopped Monday, February 21, at 12:45am for driving the wrong way down a one-way street.

Immediately after being pulled over, the situation got out of hand. ABC7’s Charles Thomas reported that a department spokesman told ABC7 that while officers tried to handcuff Mr. Morgan, he reached in his waistband for an unregistered Glock handgun and opened fire.

The ensuing gun battle resulted in 3 officers receiving gunshot wounds from the 17 rounds Mr. Morgan fired from his Glock semi-automatic pistol, none of them serious. Mr. Morgan is in critical condition after being hit with as many as 25 rounds fired by the officers.

Due to his condition, Mr. Morgan has been unable to give a statement to Police. Thomas also reported the spokesman as saying the last conscious words Morgan said were “they” -- presumably the cops -- “tried to rob me”.
