Fla. Trooper Working Fatal Crash Charged With DUI

CRESTVIEW, Fla. - A state trooper directing traffic at a deadly car crash was arrested on a drunken driving charge after other officers said they smelled alcohol on his breath.

Phillip S. Shank, 44, was placed on paid administrative leave while the Highway Patrol investigates, Lt. Steve Preston said.

Shank registered 0.087 percent and 0.08 percent on separate blood-alcohol level tests, according to his traffic citation. The legal limit is 0.08 percent.

The trooper began his shift late Tuesday and was arrested almost six hours later. Investigators have not yet determined when he may have consumed alcohol, Preston said.

Shank did not have a telephone listing and could not be reached for comment Thursday. He was booked at the Okaloosa County Jail and released on $350 bond. Jail records did not indicate whether he has a lawyer.
