Former Detroit Police Chief Enters Plea, Pays Fine

ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) -- Former Detroit Police Chief Jerry Oliver entered a no contest plea Thursday to a misdemeanor charge of possessing an unlicensed handgun.

According to an agreement worked out with prosecutors, the charge could be dismissed in 90 days if Oliver stays out of trouble.

A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt but is treated as such for sentencing purposes.

Oliver, 56, stepped down Oct. 31, saying attention over the gun had become a distracting sideshow.

Oliver did not tell airport officials he had his .25-caliber pistol in his checked luggage before taking a flight Oct. 18 from Detroit Metropolitan Airport to Philadelphia.

“This is one of the situations we’re going to put behind us,” Oliver said outside the Romulus court Thursday.

He paid a $200 fine before leaving.
