MADISON, Wisc. (AP) - Police shot a knife-wielding man at a downtown day care center Tuesday morning, while a center employee was hurt and taken to a hospital.

The man entered the Red Caboose Day Care Center, where police confronted him and shot him, police spokesman Larry Kamholz said. It was unclear how the center employee was hurt.

Kamholz had no information about the extent of the man’s injuries. He also did not know the severity of the injuries to the day care center employee.

Suzanne Kohring, a program supervisor at Red Caboose, said all the children were OK but declined to answer any other questions.

About an hour and a half after the shooting, police and parents led about 20 children out of the center to a secure location.

Police Chief Richard Williams said the shooting involved two veteran officers and the department would launch an investigation into what happened. He said he was confident “they did what they needed to do.”
