Police are investigating an overnight shootout in the Englewood neighborhood. A man who police say was running away from them turned and fired a handgun at the officers. Police returned fired and struck him several times.
The man, whose identity was not disclosed, was listed in serious but stable condition this morning at Stroger Hospital of Cook County, authorities said. Neither officer was injured.
At about 11:30 p.m. Monday, officers were talking to the man outdoors on the 700 block of West 59th Street in the South Side neighborhood, police said. The man started running and then turned and fired on the officers, who returned fire, authorities said.
Police have convened a roundtable to determine if the officers acted appropriately. More than a dozen people have been shot and killed or wounded in confrontations with Chicago police so far this year. Investigations determined the past shootings justified.
