Colonie, N.Y. (AP) -- A state trooper shot himself in the thigh and foot at a firing range in suburban Albany as he holstered his semiautomatic handgun, according to authorities.

Sgt. Jeffrey Carmichael, a training officer at the State Police Academy and 18-year veteran, was hurt Thursday afternoon during a shooting competition at the state’s annual Police and Fire Games. The weeklong event has more than 1,000 competitors from police and fire departments across the state.

State Police Lt. Glenn Miner said a routine investigation is being conducted, and a gun malfunction hasn’t been ruled out.

Carmichael was taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital with the bullet still lodged in his foot.
