(MANSFIELD, Mass.) -- George J. Wadland of Mansfield, formerly of Weymouth and Somerville, a retired police sergeant, died Friday at Sturdy Memorial Hospital. He was 82.
Born in Somerville, Mr. Wadland was raised and educated in Somerville. He graduated from Somerville High School. A Mansfield resident for the past 20 years, he had previously lived in Weymouth for over 25 years.
He was a sergeant with the Metropolitan District Commission Police Force for 26 years, retiring in 1976.
A World War II Army Air Corps Veteran, Mr. Wadland served as a master sergeant in the 419th Night Fighter Squadron in the Pacific Theater from 1942 to 1945.
He was a past commander of the American Legion Post 447 of Somerville and parishioner at St. Mary’s Church in Mansfield.
Mr. Wadland is survived by his wife, Dorothy E. (Saladino); a son, Joseph J. of Andover; a daughter, Bernadette Coughlin of Somerset; a brother, William of Somerville; three sisters, Margaret Burke, Julia Morrissey and Agnes O’Donnell, all of Somerville; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10:30 am. at St. Mary’s Church, Mansfield.
Burial will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
