Off-Duty Chicago Cop Shoots, Kills Man

By Nancy Ryan, The Chicago Tribune

A 21-year-old male was shot and killed by an off-duty Chicago police officer late Tuesday after a confrontation outside a McDonald’s restaurant in the Hyde Park neighborhood.

The shooting occurred in the 5300 block of Kenwood Avenue around 11 p.m., about three hours after Steven Curry and two other males allegedly threatened the Wentworth District officer who was doing security work for the restaurant, said police spokesman David Bayless.

The three men left the restaurant around 8 p.m., and the unnamed officer wrote out an assault case report on the incident, Bayless said.

At 11 p.m., Curry and three other men returned. Seeing the officer outside the restaurant, the four walked up to him and threatened to physically harm him, Bayless said. Curry then allegedly moved his hand towards his waistband as if reaching for a weapon, Bayless said.

The officer fired several shots at Curry, Bayless said. Curry, address unknown, was pronounced dead at the scene, a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

No weapon was recovered from the scene. Police were questioning one man early today at Wentworth Area detective headquarters. Two others were still at large, Bayless said.
