Redundancy is life (two is one, one is none)

During SHOT Show 2014 last week, I was reminded (twice!) about the rule of redundancy. On two different occasions, I had a piece of gear go down, and in each case, there was not backup item immediately at hand.

Neither incident had life-threatening implications — actually, both problems were minor technical glitches which were easily solved with a little MacGyver-like ingenuity (and who doesn’t like a good puzzle, right?).

But the lesson rang in my head: There’s no excuse for not having a backup (or two) of _________.

Let’s fill in the blank. I’ll start, and you add your thoughts on this list in the comments area below.

Firearms (duh)
Magazines/Ammo
Flashlights/Batteries
Handcuffs/Cuff Keys
Knives/Multi-tools
Necessary Keys
Eyewear (prescription and sunglasses)
Lighters/Matches
Rubber Gloves
Clothes/Socks/Shoes

What else would you add to the above list? Would you prefer to have an extra battery (and ensure it’s charged) for your phone, or might you choose to have a pre-paid “burner phone” in your kit?
