PROVIDENCE, R.I. - An officer fatally shot with his own gun by a suspect at police headquarters has been promoted posthumously.
Detective James Allen, 50, son of a retired police captain and a 27-year veteran, was promoted Monday to the rank of detective sergeant. He also was awarded the department’s Medal of Valor and Purple Heart ribbons.
Police say Esteban Carpio, 26, who was being questioned in connection with a stabbing, took Allen’s service weapon and shot him around midnight Saturday. Carpio then fled out a third-story window at police headquarters; he was captured shortly afterward.
Carpio is being held on a murder charge.
Allen’s funeral is scheduled for Thursday.
