Police1 Staff Report
(RALEIGH, N.C.) -- Even though he was checked hourly, a 31-year-old robbery suspect committed suicide in the Central Prison hospital yesterday.
Curtis Lee Woodall, 31, hanged himself by a sheet tied to a grate in bathroom stall between 3:05 a.m. and 3:30 a.m., authorities said. He was found 25 minutes after the last correctional officer’s check.
Woodall was shot by an off-duty police officer on Nov. 25 after he allegedly robbed a bank, exchanged gunfire with the officer and attempted to carjack a woman.
“He was not on a suicide watch, no,” Warden Robey Lee told WRAL-TV. “There was no indication from the physician or anyone else that he needed to be placed under any suicide watch or anything of that nature.”
Woodall did leave a note, but the contents are not being released.
The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the suicide.
