Texas Community Gathers to Raise Money in Wake of Officer’s Death

By Casey Stegall, KVUE News - Austin

The Austin, Texas community gathered Thursday night at the Speakeasy Bar to help raise money for the family of an Austin police officer killed in the line of duty nearly two weeks ago.

One week has passed since Austin Police Officer Amy Donovan was laid to rest. The wife and mother of four was killed on Oct. 30 in East Austin, when a police cruiser driven by her partner accidentally pinned her against a pole.

The bar put out tip jars to collect money. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to the family. They also gave customers the ability to contribute on their tab.

The event was sponsored by the 100 Club, a group who offers financial aide to families of fallen police officers.

“It’s amazing to be on the other side of it and see how many people really come out and care about the officers in our community,” said Colleen Hunter, whose husband Clint was an APD officer that died in 2002 trying to stop a high speed chase on I-35.

Donovan’s husband was not at the fundraiser but sent a message to the community thanking them for their support at Thursday’s event and over the past two weeks.
