Undercover Officer Shoots, Kills Man in Robbery Attempt

The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A man was shot dead by police Tuesday night as he tried to rob two undercover narcotics investigators who were on a stakeout, authorities said.

The officers were in street clothes, doing surveillance work in Southwest Philadelphia just before 8 p.m. when a man approached them with a gun and demanded money, police Sgt. Roland Lee said. One of the officers then shot the would-be robber, Lee said.

The wounded gunman tried to run, but collapsed a half block away and later died at a hospital, he said.

Police would not immediately release the name of the man who was shot or the two officers. Lee said Internal Affairs officers were investigating the shooting.

Police recovered the handgun believed to have been used in the robbery from the scene of the shooting, Lee said.
