LUGOFF, S.C. — A young boy decided to go another route for his Halloween costume and dressed up as a South Carolina patrolman, honoring his trooper father.
Lugoff resident Ashley Sellers Nicks shared the story on Facebook and said that her son, Gunner Nicks, originally chose to be the Flash for Halloween, WISTV reports. But when they were at a TJ Maxx, Gunner found a state trooper uniform and excitedly told his mother he wanted to dress up like his father, former trooper Richard Nicks.
In 2012, Richard Nicks was struck by a drunk driver who ran a stop sign while he was on duty, leaving him with several long lasting injuries. Richard broke his back and had nerve damage to his right leg. He was eventually medically retired.
“It has been a mental physical and emotional struggle for Richard since all this happened because he truly loved what he did,” Ashley Nicks said. “He misses it everyday but moments like this with Gunner wanting to be just like his hero make him feel so much better.”
