PEORIA, Ariz. — The children of slain Officer Travis Murphy were joined by dozens of officers and firefighters on their first day of school, ABC 15 reported.

Kalee, 7, and Kody, 5, lost their father five years ago when he was shot and killed in the line of duty. The officer’s colleagues vowed to stand by his family.

“Obviously there’s a big hole missing today,” their mother Danielle Murphy told the publication.

Last month, a jury convicted the man who killed the officer of murder.

Murphy said the show of support helps to fill the void. She didn’t tell the children until they arrived that the men and women were “daddy’s friends.”

Kalee and Kody walked hand-in-hand through the path lined with officers.

“They said I would never walk alone,” Murphy said. “They would always be with us. Five years later, they’re still with us. It is a nice feeling to know that we’re still not alone.”
