GREENSBORO, N.C. — A battle of the badges is brewing to eliminate bulging stomachs and raise money for local charities.

The Greensboro Police Department is taking on the Greensboro Fire Department in the Biggest Winner Challenge to see which agency can lose the most weight and to raise more than $10,000 for local charities.

The eight-week challenge pits two teams of 10 from each department against one another to see which team can lose the most weight.

Teams will work with event sponsors Greensboro Sportsplex, Crossfit Greensboro and Triad Complete Nutrition to learn how to eat healthier and train effectively. Each team will have weekly weigh-ins and sports competitions to shed pounds.

A week and a half into the challenge, the teams have lost a combined 90 pounds.

"(Police) Chief (Tim) Bellamy and I are being supportive and encouraging our folks not only to exercise and be healthy, but learn how to exercise correctly,” said fire Chief Gregory Grayson, who is participating in the competition with Bellamy. “The competition is to help make it fun.”

In addition to the number of lost pounds, each team receives extra points for the money it raises. Each team is donating $1,000 to charity to start the competition. The police are supporting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Firefighters are supporting the Jaycee Burn Center.

“We’re meeting new people and building relationships and really cheering one another on,” Bellamy said. “We take it for granted that our jobs require physical fitness and endurance, plus this relieves job stress.”
