NEW YORK — A police officer that was killed nearly 40 years ago was memorialized on the street where he was shot.

NY Daily News reported that the street was renamed in honor of NYPD Patrolman David Guttenberg.

“Our hearts are full knowing that he has not been forgotten 39 years after his death,” Guttenberg’s daughter Amy Guttenberg-Windsor said.

Guttenberg walked in on a robbery on Dec. 28, 1978 and was fatally shot. The gunman and his accomplice were convicted of murder.

“That moment changed our lives and the lives of everyone who knew him forever,” Guttenberg-Windsor said. “But what got us through that difficult time was the outpouring of love and support we received from our family and friends, the Bay Ridge community, the 68th Precinct, and the people of this great city of New York.”

City Councilman Vincent Gentile said the tragedy increased safety for future cops.

“As sad as it was, Officer Guttenberg’s tragic killing was a catalyst for new safety efforts,” Gentile said. “His death sparked a widespread effort to promote the protection of police officers in the line of duty with vests worn under the uniform. (His) widow Barbara was instrumental in bringing this issue to the forefront and in the years that followed, she became a fierce advocate for bulletproof vests.”
