TRENTON, N.J. — A man accused of shooting a Mercer County sheriff’s officer surrendered to authorities early Monday after a half-hour standoff.
Billy Walter Heisler, 27, did not give up immediately when a police task force caught him in Trenton around midnight Sunday. He turned himself in at about 12:30 a.m., said Angelo Onofri, an assistant Mercer County Prosecutor.
Heisler, who lives in Trenton and Morrisville, Pa., was charged with attempted homicide and bail was set at $1 million.
The initial shooting was Sunday afternoon.
Authorities said Josh Hahn, an unarmed off-duty sheriff’s officer, was driving with his father in Hamilton Township when he saw Heisler push a woman.
The sheriff’s officer intervened, but the gunman opened fire before hopping in a car and driving off, authorities said.
Hahn, 30, underwent surgery Sunday at Capital Health System’s Fuld campus in Trenton. He had damage to both lungs and a vein in his chest, Sheriff Kevin Larkin said.
He was in critical condition Monday morning, but was stable, a hospital spokesman said.
