GILBERT, Az. — A Gilbert police officer rescued two dogs from drowning Thursday morning, 12 News reported.
Officer Michael Curtis received a call about two dogs in a trapped in a canal. When he arrived, Curtis saw a chocolate lab was struggling to stay afloat while a black lab watched from the edge.
“She wasn’t looking good,” Curtis said to 12 News. “She was really tired and the current was really strong.”
It took 10 minutes to get the dog on the snare, he said.
“I had a citizen hold my duty belt from behind and we reached over and were able to grab the dog,” said Curtis in the report.
“She was bleeding pretty good from her paws. She was really happy to be out. As soon as I put her in my patrol vehicle she laid down, she didn’t want to walk, she didn’t want to do anything.”
The dogs were brought to police headquarters, cleaned and given food and water. The county animal control returned the dogs to their owners.
