NEW YORK — The first military service dog to join the NYPD passed away after a long life of service.
Caesar, a German Shepherd, was euthanized Feb. 14 after fighting cancer, but not before his fellow cops and K-9s gave him a final salute, the New York Daily News reports.
The K-9’s handler, Officer Juan Rodriguez, walked Caesar down a line of officers and dogs throughout the streets of New York before ending his service.
Caesar joined the NYPD in 2014 after three tours to Afghanistan in the Army.

He was given his name while training with the department and became part of their Transit K-9 Unit, working patrols and counterterrorism duties.
