Video: TASER scenarios captured on tape

One run-in with a knife-wielding woman ended in Australian police deploying a TASER

NEW SOUTH WALES, Australia — Police are seen deploying TASERs in a variety of situations – including one run-in with a knife-wielding elderly woman in a nightgown – in footage obtained by an Australian news channel.

The woman is hit with police ECD after she advances towards officers with her weapon, ignoring warnings that they will use their less lethal devices. Earlier, she had threatened to stab them outside the front of her home.

TASERs can act as a strong deterrant, New South Wales Police assistant commissioner Alan Clarke told A Current Affair. Usually, suspects comply with police rather than face the temporary pain from the TASER shock, he said.

The devices, which offer an alternative to lethal force, are capable of delivering 50,000 volts of electricity to temporarily stun a suspect.
“Last year through 2010 we were drawing the Taser 80 to 85 times a month and fired 30 percent of time. In 2011 we are drawing the Taser about 66 times a month,” Clarke told the program.
