JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has identified the motorcycle deputy who was killed in a head-on crash Sunday as Sgt. David Baldwin, a 27-year veteran of the department.
The wreck occurred near W. 64th Parkway at about 10:30 a.m., according to investigators.
Baldwin was on duty and driving northbound on 93 when the driver of a Saturn SUV tried to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone.
Authorities said the Saturn’s driver, 83-year-old Kenneth Hosch, of Golden, crossed the double yellow lane and hit the deputy’s motorcycle head-on, investigators said. The deputy was thrown from the Harley-Davidson. Although he was wearing his helmet and eye protection, Baldwin suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hosch was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash and suffered minor injuries. He was transported to St. Anthony’s for treatment, then taken to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for questioning.
Investigators said charges are pending but do not suspect drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
7NEWS checked, and Hosch has had traffic troubles in the past, including a 1992 Careless Driving citation and a 2005 citation for Following Too Closely.
Baldwin began his law enforcement career with the Sheriff’s Office in 1987. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 1996, and worked varying assignments in the Detentions Division, Civil & Fugitive Unit, Bomb Squad, Patrol Division, and most recent assignment to the Traffic/Motorcycle Unit.
Baldwin also served as a firearms instructor, driving instructor, and instructor for the Basic and Advanced Law Enforcement Motorcycle School.
“It takes a special kind of person to take an oath to protect and serve their community, and to constantly place the safety of others above their own,” said Sheriff Ted Mink. “Dave will be remembered for his love of family, his duty to service, and his dedication to this community.”
Funeral arrangements for Baldwin are are still being planned.
