WOODSTOCK, Ill. — A McHenry County sheriff’s deputy shot last year during a domestic call has died, Northwest Herald reported.

Deputy Dwight Maness, 47, was still recovering from injuries sustained in the shooting when he died during a rehabilitation session.

Maness, a former Army Ranger, was one of two deputies injured responding to a call of a domestic disturbance on Oct. 16, 2014. When officer arrived, gunman Scott B. Peters fired more than a dozen rounds at them.

Maness was shot in the abdomen and twice in the leg by a .223-caliber AR15 rifle, Daily Herald reported.

Maness had undergone several surgeries for his shattered femur bone where a three-inch piece of bone was missing.

“From day one (Maness) was going to be back on the job as soon as he was physically able to be,” former McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren told the publication.

In a Sept. 2 Facebook post published by the Daily Herald, Maness was hopeful for recovery and thankful for support.
