LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. — A South Carolina sheriff’s office is mourning the loss of one of their own after a deputy collapsed during a training event and died.

Lancaster County Deputy James Kirk Jr., 57, died at a hospital after collapsing during a training event at the sheriff’s office firing range, The Herald reports. It’s unclear how exactly Kirk died, but Chief Deputy Maj. Matt Shaw said in a statement that the deputy “passed away from what appears to be a medical condition.”

“Deputy Kirk was a true public servant who dedicated his life to the service of others and this community,” Sheriff Barry Faile said. “Our hearts are heavy as we mourn his loss.”

Kirk joined the sheriff’s office in 2015 after serving 25 years for the Lancaster Police Department, according to WSOC-TV.
