BOSTON — A Boston police officer has undergone surgery after being shot in the leg while responding to a domestic violence incident.

Officer Shawn Marando is expected to recover from the injuries suffered in an exchange of gunfire Tuesday between police officers and the suspect, 25-year-old Tyrone Cummings.

Cummings was taken to Boston Medical Center with serious injuries after the incident at about 7 a.m. in the city’s Dorchester neighborhood.

Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said Cummings had two illegal handguns and a bag full of bullets and appears to have been planning to use deadly violence against his girlfriend.

Conley says his office has begun a standard investigation into the use of force by police.

But he says an initial investigation shows the officers appear to have acted to defend themselves and others.

Another woman was also hit in the leg during the gunfire.
