RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. — A San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department sergeant was stabbed multiple times before she opened fire on a man in a parking lot.

The confrontation occurred in a front of a Hobby Lobby in Rancho Cucamonga Monday morning, KABC-TV reports. Sheriff John McMahon said the female sergeant, who has not been identified, was supposed to conduct a welfare check on the suspect after he called 911 claiming to be abducted and made “other statements that didn’t seem to be making sense.”

McMahon said the suspect was armed with a knife that was between 6 and 8 inches long. The suspect stabbed the officer multiple times in the face, shoulder and chest. The sergeant was able to reach for her gun and shot at the suspect four times, but he was not hit. He was arrested shortly after.

The sergeant, a 26-year veteran of the force, was transported to a hospitable in critical but stable condition. She is expected to survive.
