DELMAR, Del. — A Delaware police officer and an elderly couple were seriously injured in an attack Sunday, according to WPVI. Cpl. Keith Heacook, who was responding to a fight in progress, is now ‘fighting for his life,’ authorities said.
Randon Wilkerson, 30, has been charged with attempted murder and assault, reported WPVI. According to police, a 911 caller said Wilkerson began fighting other residents in his house and destroying property. He also assaulted the elderly couple who lived across the street, police said.
According to WPVI, more officers responded to the scene when Heacook became unresponsive. Heacook was later found inside the home unconscious and rushed to a hospital with serious injuries.
"He is a husband, son, brother, and father. Keith is fighting for his life right now and he needs your prayers along with the elderly couple who were also injured," said Delmar Police Chief Ivan Barkley to WPVI.
Police did not detail how Heacook or the elderly couple were injured.
"My heart is heavy tonight for three innocent victims: Cpl. Keith Heacook of the Delmar Police Department, who is being treated for grave injuries he suffered in an attack this morning, and an elderly couple who also suffered severe injuries at the hands of the same attacker," said Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings in a statement.
