Man who shot BLM ranger, CHP officer part of ‘sovereign citizen’ movement

NEVADA CITY, Calif. — The man accused of shooting and injuring a Bureau of Land Management Officer and a California Highway Patrol officer was arraigned Thursday morning in Nevada County Superior Court.

Brent Cole, 60, was charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of assault with a firearm upon a peace officer. The charges stem from a shootout in Edwards Crossing on June 14.

Ferguson said CHP officer Brant Hardin was shot in the leg and has already returned to work. BLM officer Tad Pultorak was shot in the shoulder and is still recovering at home. Cole was also wounded in the shootout and is doing okay.
