PARKER, Colo. — The Parker Police Department released body camera footage Thursday of the Sept. 2 fatal officer-involved shooting of an AK-47-wielding man on a shooting rampage.
Reports show Randy Rodick’s wife called 911 to report her husband was drunk, attempting to leave their home with several firearms, and would kill anyone who tried to stop him.
Rodick, 40, had an AK-47 with a 75-round drum and a pistol when he shot and wounded Detective Dan Brite, according to the Denver Post. He then drove his RV, filled with thousands of more rounds and a shotgun, through a field while firing at officers and bystanders, police said.
Rodick was shot in the head by an officer who was crouched behind an SUV door 30 yards away.
“To be in that moment and to have the presence of mind with all that is going — to know that there is an officer down, to know that people are being shot at, to know that this guy is armed to the hilt — to be able to stop yourself, take in that sight picture, slow your breathing and pull that trigger one time and end this thing,” 18th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler told reporters at a Thursday morning news conference.
Officials said the officers’ quick thinking and response “undoubtedly prevented further bloodshed.”
“That is an amazing shot,” Brauchler said. “That kept this from turning this I think into something far worse.”
The video was released in conjunction with the announcement that no officers will be charged for the shooting, according to the publication.
