LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Authorities say a man was shot and killed after he emerged from a large storm drain and exchanged gunfire with officers in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Las Cruces Police Sgt. Roberto Gutierrez says the man, identified as 29-year-old Jose Salas, died of gunshot wounds at the scene Monday.

The shooting ended a three-hour manhunt that began when police responded to a fight between two people.

Police say a man matching Salas’ description fled in a stolen pickup truck and sparked a chase that closed parts of the city.

An officer later saw a man run into the storm drain near a senior center. Officers swarmed the neighborhood surrounding the drain and a dry flood control pond.

Police say the man eventually came out of the drain and exchanged gunshots with officers.
