SHENANGO TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The Bessemer Borough police chief died after accidentally shooting himself while cleaning a gun, WKBN reported.

Thomas Edward Macri, 56, accidentally shot himself in the chest with a .40 caliber pistol Sept. 13 in his home, Pennsylvania State Police told the publication.

Macri was found by his girlfriend, taken to the hospital immediately and pronounced dead an hour later, WFMJ reported.

A preliminary investigation into the incident has led state police to believe that no foul play is involved.

Macri previously worked as a New Castle City police officer, where he was chief of the agency’s narcotics unit.
